Off to the Presidential Office….

Finally took the tinsel off (!) for today’s diocesan office Christmas outing in the rain to the Presidential Office, Taipei City ~ not long opened to the public.

History (with a capital ‘H’) and more History, of the Republic of China, of Taiwan, of the building, of the Governor Generals and of the Presidents……

So much History, and lots of it so tragic ~ tales of war, conflict, colonisation, bombing, defeat, surrender ~ but finally restoration and renewal.

Central courtyard is beautiful, like an oasis with flowers and trees and birds………. and the only place where photography is allowed ~ all in the rain of course!

Our visit today most fitting with an presidential election in a few weeks time and reporters and campaigners lining up outside to present their Election News items in front of the building….

Looked for the President, but he was busy!

Reminds me of A. A Milne’s poem about Buckingham Palace, and especially the last 2 verses:

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace –
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
A face looked out, but it wasn’t the King’s.
“He’s much too busy a-signing things,”
Says Alice.

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace –
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
“Do you think the King knows all about me?”
“Sure to, dear, but it’s time for tea,”
Says Alice
