Filipino Migrant Ministry ~ Tanzi here we come!

Off to the northern suburbs of Taichung yesterday to visit the Ugnayan Migrant Ministry in Tanzi – to show Lynn, our lovely Filipino visitor the ministry of the R. C. Church among the Filipino Migrant community…

Went by train from Taichung Station (pretty historic – built by the Japanese in 1905) to Tanzi by slow train – NT$ 15 for about a 15-minute ride – hey it doesn’t get much cheaper than that!

And there was my good friend, Fr. Joy waiting to meet us – we studied Chinese language classes together for many months – many years ago!

There’s about 3,000 Filipinos in the Tanzi area working mainly in manufacturing, including many in the Export Processing Zone – and about 450-500 come to the church there on Sundays, their day off.  Also on Sundays, the centre runs lots of classes in all sorts of things – computing, bar-tending, baking, coffee barista, sewing, massage – all skills that could help the workers to find alternative jobs once they return home.  Grants come from Maryknoll and the worldwide church, the Philippines government and special groups such as the Bill Gates Foundation, plus donations and offerings.  The centre has a good relationship with the Taiwan authorities, and it’s clear their ministry is really meeting a great need in the area. And there’s also counselling and help for the migrant workers experiencing problems at work or in relationships, including accommodation for those in need.

Most migrant workers in Taiwan come from one of 4 countries, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand, but only the Filipino workers have such a good support system as this…. it’s wonderful!

Toured the 2 main buildings, one of which is the church, the other a centre…

And had a great lunch, Filipino style…

What a fun day ~ and may God bless this important ministry ….
